Choice Culminating Project
ARTIST'S STATEMENT: For this project, I wanted to try a different approach. The project we were assigned was supposed to be on advertising. In addition to just taking pictures of advertisements in Cleveland, I chose to stray slightly from the path and also interview some teachers at Cleveland about how they feel advertising affects students. The advertisements I saw advertised everything from ad space in the Clarion to the concept of consent. Most of the teachers interviewed said that they had no problem with ads in high schools, though Mr. Mirsepassi did pose the question, has the student population moved beyond paper advertisement and how affective are physical ads still? I also asked how teachers felt about advertisements specifically in Cleveland. Ms. Adana thought that ads in Cleveland are fine, so long as they encourage a positive environment, while Mirsepassi thought that advertisements influence students and doesn't allow autonomy. All of the teachers interviewed did agree that the advertisements they see the most of in Cleveland were for school events, sports, and clubs rather than product advertisements, and ergo are only selling the idea of school spirit. The final question I asked was how they think the school should handle flier/poster/advertisement related vandalism. The general gist of their answers was that posters should be closely monitored to prevent vandalism and there should be a clear, specific, step-by-step protocol with set consequences to ensure that there are repercussions for those who choose to deface or add hate speech to any poster or flier in the school.
